Only main wrinkle I have is the pixel response times on this display seem quite slow, but it's not that big of a deal in normal everyday use. And because it's a 16:10 display even below the notch, I'm not losing any screen real-estate in terms of aspect ratio as compared to my outgoing XPS 15. The notch isn't really noticeable, since I leave the taskbar up at the top for all my full screen apps anyway, and I'm using dark mode for everything because I'm not a troglodyte so the black taskbar blends right into black notch area. It's definitely not quite an OLED, but in most cases I'd say it's fairly close in terms of black levels.

I liked the screen on my XPS 15, don't get me wrong, but this thing is Mini-LED and just gets absurdly bright. It seems strange to me for a MacBook to actually have a better port selection than a comparable Windows laptop, but there you have it.

Port selection is great, the fact you have dedicated MagSafe for charging means you have all 3 USB-C ports free for use, and the HDMI is nice as well. And I can definitely see why some people like the industrial design so much, it definitely has this sleek look to it, with no cut-outs or flaring angles or anything like that. I'm not going to test that, because this is expensive, but even compared to my old XPS 15, which is already one of the best-built Windows laptops, this definitively feels like a step above that. So I figured I'd give an in-depth impressions thread from someone who has been vehemently non-Apple for basically my entire adult life.įirst thing I have to say is that this thing is super solid, like it feels like it could take a bullet. Other than very occasionally using a Mac in a couple college classes, where they basically just told us to open a microscope program and that was it, that is all the experience I have with modern MacOS, and even then, those were fairly old at the time, probably using MacOS X Lion or something similar. Just to give an idea of how old it is, it has MacOS 9 on it, and the first release of MacOS X came out nearly 22 years ago. The last Apple product to actually cross the threshold of our front door (other than occasional visitors with phones) is an old teal iMac G3 that my uncle gave my mom when he moved to Seattle. This is kind of a huge thing for me because I have very little experience with MacOS.
